A bizarre incident occurred near Turtle Lake, Saskatchewan, when a fish plummeted from the sky, striking Marie Ahlstrom’s car windshield. Despite the unusual nature of the event, Ahlstrom remained unharmed, although the fish left a distinct impression on her windshield.
Initially mistaking the impact for a rock, Ahlstrom became certain of the unexpected source upon noticing blood. Upon closer inspection with her husband, they discovered the remnants of the fish, which had also damaged the side mirror of the vehicle. While making a wildlife collision claim with her insurance, Ahlstrom faced some confusion as one adjustor contested whether a fish could be classified as wildlife. However, the matter was eventually resolved.
Although rare, falling fish incidents are not unheard of in the Turtle Lake region. Local birds, particularly osprey, are known to occasionally drop fish that are too heavy for them to carry. Prairie naturalist Trevor Herriot suggested that a bald eagle might have been responsible for the incident, as ospreys typically migrate south during this time of year.
There was speculation about the possibility of a water spout from the lake causing the fish to be airborne, although this was considered unlikely given the weather conditions at the time. Despite the unusual circumstances, Ahlstrom found humor in the situation, attributing the event to either wildlife, an act of God, or an act of fate that startled her.
The incident, which startled Ahlstrom, has left many intrigued by the unusual occurrence in the quiet Saskatchewan town.
