“Gaza Health Ministry Receives 54 Bodies from Conflict”

In a surprising development on Wednesday, the Gaza Health Ministry announced the reception of 54 unidentified bodies and 66 boxes containing the remains of Palestinians believed to have perished during the two-year conflict with Hamas from Israel. Health authorities in Gaza have initiated the process of identifying the remains.

Mu’in Al-Wahidi, who heads the special committee at Al-Shifa Hospital for receiving bodies, confirmed the acceptance of the unidentified bodies and remains late on Wednesday. Al-Wahidi mentioned that they received intact bodies and human remains in closed boxes, which will undergo forensic examination the following day.

The health officials clarified that they lack information regarding the circumstances or locations of the individuals’ deaths, as well as any identifying details. They also specified that the transfer of remains to Gaza was not part of any truce agreement or an exchange for Israeli hostages.

Last week, Israeli authorities released the bodies of 15 unidentified Palestinians, marking the final exchange under the initial phase of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire plan between Israel and Hamas. This action followed the recovery of Ran Gvili, the last hostage held in Gaza for over 840 days after being taken by Hamas in an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The 54 bodies brought from Israel to Gaza on Wednesday increase the total number of bodies released by Israel to 414 since the commencement of the ceasefire deal on October 10, 2024. The return of the bodies of the deceased Palestinians was a key commitment outlined in the first phase of the ceasefire agreement signed the previous October.

Amani Al-Naouq, spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza, confirmed the facilitation of the transfer on Wednesday. Al-Naouq emphasized the challenging task ahead for forensic authorities in identifying the remains despite limited resources, highlighting the numerous families seeking clarity about their missing loved ones.

The transfer of bodies occurred amidst a grim backdrop in Gaza, with Israeli tank shelling and airstrikes claiming the lives of 24 Palestinians, including seven children and a paramedic, on the same day. The Israeli military attributed the strikes to militants firing at Israeli troops near the armistice line with Hamas, leading to severe injury to an Israeli soldier and disrupting the ceasefire agreement.
