The Recording Academy has made adjustments to its regulations for the 2026 Grammy Awards, introducing five new categories. The academy revealed the addition of a best Asian pop music performance category, recognizing releases from genres like K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and more. This award will be bestowed upon the performer.
Furthermore, a new best traditional pop vocal performance category will honor artists whose music diverges significantly from contemporary pop music styles. Additionally, a new best Latin song category will acknowledge songwriters for their contributions to Spanish-language songs.
Changes have also been made to R&B and folk categories. A new award for best R&B collaboration or duo/group performance has been introduced, alongside a revamped best R&B solo performance category. Similarly, the folk category has undergone a transformation similar to that of country music last year, with the best folk album now categorized as best contemporary folk album, and a new best traditional folk album category has been established.
In addition to the introduction of five new categories, modifications have been implemented regarding the criteria for certain awards, notably the best new artist category. Artists are now allowed to submit in this category up to four times, an increase from the previous limit of three, reflecting the evolving music landscape where artists may take time to establish themselves.
There is no set limit on the number of previous releases an artist can have, with a screening committee responsible for assessing whether the artist has made a significant impact in the music industry before the eligibility year. Artists who have received a Grammy nomination in the past are not eligible for the best new artist award.
Moreover, the Grammys will now permit qualified members to vote in a wider range of categories. Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, expressed enthusiasm for the changes, highlighting that the alterations reflect the diversity and innovation present in today’s music industry. Mason anticipates an exciting year ahead for the Grammy Awards in 2027.
