In preparation for her fifth and final Winter Games, Hilary Knight showcased her scoring prowess with a three-goal performance in a 6-1 victory over Canada, leading Team USA to a 2-0 series advantage in the women’s hockey Rivalry Series at Buffalo’s KeyBank Center. Despite approaching 36 and publicly announcing her retirement post-Olympics in May, Knight, the team captain and a highly decorated player, demonstrated her skill by finishing tied for the league lead with 29 points in 30 games during the PWHL season.
Knight’s impressive display, which included goals in familiar positions in front of the net and an empty-netter, followed Abbey Murphy’s natural hat trick in the series opener. The depth of offensive talent within the American team was further highlighted by Laila Edwards, Kelly Pannek, and Hayley Scamurra’s contributions in the recent game. Additionally, goalkeeper Gwyneth Philips made 29 saves to secure the victory.
In response, Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin scored, and Kayle Osborne, in her national team debut, stopped 26 shots. Despite the losses, Canadian coach Troy Ryan remained optimistic, emphasizing the importance of the learning process and team improvement rather than dwelling on the exhibition results.
As the series shifts to Edmonton for the remaining games in December, both teams are expected to refine their lineups and strategies for the upcoming Winter Games in Milan Cortina. The U.S. team’s recent success against Canada, including a victory in the world championships, sets the stage for an intense and competitive rivalry in the upcoming matches.
