Hulu has officially scrapped the planned reboot of the iconic ’90s series, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” as confirmed by Sarah Michelle Gellar, the original show’s lead, in a recent Instagram post. Gellar revealed that Hulu had decided to halt the project, putting an end to the anticipated revival.
The pilot for the reboot, titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,” was shot with Ryan Kiera Armstrong, 16, cast as the new vampire slayer. The original series, which centered around a group of young individuals battling supernatural entities in Sunnydale, California, was groundbreaking for its time, revolutionizing television storytelling.
According to cultural critics, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” made a lasting impact on television production, incorporating intricate narrative arcs and nuanced character development against the backdrop of contemporary societal issues and tensions. Gellar expressed gratitude to Chloe Zhao, the Oscar-winning director selected to revive the show, acknowledging the significance of the character Buffy to both herself and fans.
Despite the cancellation of the reboot, Gellar assured fans that her connection to Buffy remains unchanged, humorously promising to be reachable even in the event of an apocalypse. Hulu has not released any official statements regarding the decision to discontinue the project.
