Israel announced the identification of another hostage’s remains handed over by Hamas as Eliyahu Margalit. The Palestinian militant group continues to search for more bodies in the Gaza Strip and appeals for increased aid access into the besieged enclave.
The Prime Minister’s Office of Israel confirmed that Margalit’s body, abducted during a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, from Kibbutz Nir Oz, was identified through forensic testing. This marks the 10th returned hostage body since the recent ceasefire commenced over a week ago. While Hamas provided an 11th body this week, it was not that of a hostage. President Donald Trump cautioned Hamas that failure to return all 28 hostages’ bodies could prompt Israel to resume hostilities.
The hostage forum, advocating for abducted individuals’ families, expressed some relief at Margalit’s repatriation but emphasized their commitment to bringing home the remaining 18 hostages. They vowed to continue organizing weekly demonstrations until all the remains are returned.
The transfer of hostages’ remains, a crucial component of the ceasefire agreement, along with aid distribution, border crossings access into Gaza, and reconstruction efforts, has been a focal point supported by the international community to end the severe conflict in Gaza.
The Israeli military and Shin Bet security service received the remains and emphasized Hamas’s obligation to honor the agreement by facilitating the return of all deceased hostages. Hamas cited challenges in retrieving some remains due to the destruction of tunnels and buildings, blaming Israel for impeding the entry of necessary machinery into Gaza for excavation.
Amidst the recovery efforts, Hamas called for increased aid inflow, expedited border crossing operations, and reconstruction initiatives in Gaza. They also urged the formation of an independent Palestinian committee to oversee Gaza’s governance and requested further Israeli troop withdrawals from designated areas.
Despite the ceasefire deadline set by Trump for the handover of all hostages, living and deceased, Hamas was expected to share information on deceased individuals and strive to return their remains promptly if the deadline was not met. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s firm stance on upholding the ceasefire terms regarding the return of hostages’ bodies.
