Israeli military actions resulted in the deaths of 11 Palestinians, which included two children and three journalists, in separate incidents in Gaza on Wednesday, according to local medics. Palestinian health officials reported that an Israeli airstrike killed three journalists who were filming a displaced persons camp in central Gaza. Additionally, medics stated that three individuals, including a 10-year-old boy, were killed by Israeli tank shelling, while two others, including a 13-year-old boy, lost their lives in separate shooting incidents in Khan Younis in the south.
The Gaza Health Ministry confirmed a total of 11 deaths from various Israeli attacks throughout the day. In response to the incident involving the journalists, Israel’s military claimed that the individuals targeted were suspected of operating a drone affiliated with Hamas in central Gaza. The military stated that the drone posed a threat to its troops, leading to the precise strike on the suspects.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate emphasized that the slain journalists were on a humanitarian mission to document the plight of civilians in displacement camps. Emad Abu Shawish, a freelance journalist present during the strike, condemned the targeting of the journalists without warning and called for an end to the ongoing violence in Gaza.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 206 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began in October 2023. The organization highlighted the lack of accountability from Israel for these casualties. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate reported a higher toll, with over 260 journalists killed.
The Israeli military did not immediately provide comments on the incidents, and tensions between Israel and Hamas persist despite a ceasefire established two years ago. The ceasefire has led to partial Israeli military withdrawal but has faced challenges, with recent Israeli incursions causing further displacement of Palestinian families.
The U.S.-brokered ceasefire has not progressed beyond the initial phase, with future steps including Hamas disarmament and the establishment of an internationally backed administration for reconstruction. However, no clear timeline has been set for these developments. President Donald Trump was set to oversee a ceremony for the “Board of Peace,” aimed at Gaza’s redevelopment.
Hamas has demanded the return of the last Israeli hostage’s remains before advancing to the next phase of the ceasefire agreement. On the Palestinian side, efforts to locate the hostage’s body have been hindered by what Hamas calls Israeli military interference. Since the ceasefire, clashes have led to the deaths of over 460 Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers.
