k.d. lang to Induct Jane Siberry into Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame

Renowned artist k.d. lang has eagerly agreed to induct Jane Siberry into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of Siberry’s exceptional career in crafting poetic songs. Lang expressed deep admiration for Siberry’s artistry, describing her as a unique and fearless intellect who effortlessly joins the ranks of esteemed Canadian songwriters. Lang noted the enigmatic quality of Siberry’s well-known compositions, such as “Mimi on the Beach” and “It Can’t Rain All the Time,” which blend specificity with intentional ambiguity.

Siberry’s songwriting skillfully intertwines individual, collective, and spiritual narratives, delving into complex themes and offering profound reflections on the intangible aspects of the human experience. Lang likened Siberry’s lyrical impact to that of Leonard Cohen, emphasizing how her music resonates with personal journeys, evoking compassion and introspection.

The induction ceremony, set to take place at Toronto’s Meridian Arts Centre, will honor Siberry as part of the Legends Induction Series alongside other influential Canadian songwriters such as Andy Kim, Gino Vannelli, Ian Thomas, and rock group Triumph. Initially conflicted about the honor due to her intensive work on a new album, Siberry eventually embraced the recognition, acknowledging a brief struggle with ego before fully appreciating the joy it brings.

Nick Fedor, the Executive Director of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, praised this year’s inductees for embodying the essence of Canadian songwriting through artistic bravery, cultural impact, and transcendent storytelling. The induction event serves as a platform for celebrating musical legacy, inspiring future generations, and elevating the significance of songwriters in shaping cultural identity.

The upcoming ceremonies in Montreal and Toronto will also recognize François Cousineau, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Michel Pagliaro, and Florent Vollant as esteemed songwriting legends, with all honorees set to be permanently commemorated at the CSHF’s location in Calgary’s Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre.
