Last Ronette of 1960s Pop Group Passes at 80

Nedra Talley Ross, the final remaining member of the 1960s Ronettes pop group known for hits like “Be My Baby,” “Baby I Love You,” and “Walking in the Rain,” has passed away at the age of 80. Ross passed away at her residence on Sunday, as confirmed by her daughter, Nedra K. Ross, and the official Instagram account of the Ronettes.

A statement expressed that Nedra’s unique voice, fashion sense, and charisma played a significant role in shaping a musical style that left a lasting impact. The Ronettes, with their captivating appearance and strong vocals, became one of the leading girl groups of their time, touring with the Rolling Stones in England and forming friendships with the Beatles, all while receiving songwriting and production guidance from Phil Spector.

In her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame acceptance speech in 2007, Ross reflected on the highs and lows of show business, emphasizing the importance of having a supportive family amidst the chaotic entertainment world. She expressed gratitude for the fun times and credited God for the blessings.

Born and raised in New York City, Ross, alongside her sisters Veronica “Ronnie” and Estelle Bennett, released their debut album, “Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes, Featuring Veronica,” in 1964. The album produced five tracks that charted on the U.S. Billboard, earning it a spot on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums. Their rendition of “Sleigh Ride” on Spector’s “A Christmas Gift for You” album gained recognition and was featured in various soundtracks.

The group’s collaboration with Phil Spector commenced in March 1963, leading to the recording of iconic songs like “Be My Baby” and “Baby I Love You.” Their music continued to resonate through various films, TV shows, and soundtracks over the years, solidifying their place in music history.

Following the Ronettes’ disbandment, Ross transitioned to Christian music, releasing the album “Full Circle” in 1978. She was married to DJ and TV personality Scott Ross until his passing in 2023. Despite a prolonged legal battle with Spector over royalties, a court ruling in 2002 overturned an earlier decision requiring Spector to pay past royalties and interest to the group.

Ross is survived by four children, with Ronnie Spector passing away in 2022 at the age of 78 and Estelle Bennett in 2009 at 67, marking the end of an era for the legendary Ronettes.
