“Love Island USA Season 8 Hits Paywall for Canadian Fans”

The most recent surprise for fans isn’t happening in Fiji but in Canada.

The eighth season of Love Island USA kicked off this week with a new group of singles ready to bring excitement and drama that viewers enjoy. However, Canadian fans looking to watch the season without cost are facing challenges.

Although Crave is offering the initial five episodes for free, subsequent streaming of the complete series on CTV platforms will no longer be free. A subscription to Crave will be required as Bell Media has ended its CTV streaming app, consolidating all content onto the subscription streaming service.

This transition to a paywall model for streaming services has affected the show, leaving fans contemplating whether investing additional money for a summer filled with text messages and romantic entanglements is worthwhile.

Expressing disappointment, one TikTok user questioned, “Is CTV really not offering us free episodes this year???” Another user on X platform wrote, “How can my Canadian friends watch Love Island tonight because I refuse to pay for Crave,” while another asked, “Where can I watch Love Island for free???”

In a news announcement, Bell Media stated that the shift aims to enhance the streaming experience by providing all content in one place. However, for devoted viewers who do not subscribe to Bell or Crave, this change translates to an added monthly expense, with subscriptions starting at approximately $12 per month for a basic plan with advertisements.

Media analyst Wade Payson-Denney noted that it is not surprising to witness established broadcasters moving towards this direction to cater to changing consumer habits, emphasizing the importance of delivering content through streaming platforms to align with evolving viewer preferences.

He cited the example of sports content being increasingly offered exclusively on streaming platforms through subscription models, such as Prime’s Monday Night Hockey.

The shift to streaming services is likely aimed at attracting younger audiences, according to freelance entertainment reporter Saleah Blancaflor. Despite concerns about streaming fatigue and rising costs, Blancaflor anticipates high viewership numbers, especially due to the fast-paced nature of Love Island, which airs six episodes weekly.

Blancaflor highlighted the “fear of missing out” phenomenon among viewers, suggesting that people are eager to stay updated on the show’s storylines and contestants to remain engaged in conversations surrounding the series.
