“Memorial in Manitoba Honors Ukrainian Children”

A moving ceremony took place at the Manitoba Legislature on Thursday, where families gathered to pay tribute to the young lives lost in Ukraine following the Russian invasion. The steps were adorned with hundreds of children’s shoes, each pair representing a tragic loss.

Oksana Khudyntsia, a Ukrainian mother in attendance, expressed the collective grief felt by the community, stating, “We may not know every child’s name who has perished in Ukraine, but we can stand together, pray, and hope for an end to the conflict.”

750 pairs of children’s shoes, illuminated by artificial candles, were displayed on the stairs leading to the legislature’s entrance in Winnipeg. This poignant gesture aimed to honor the innocent victims of Russia’s incursion into Ukraine.

Mila Shykota, one of the organizers, shared the profound emotional impact of the event, saying, “The pain is indescribable. Every parent feels the anguish when they think about the children who have been taken away— it’s a universal sorrow.”

The event coincided with World Children’s Day, observed annually on November 20 to commemorate the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Shykota emphasized that the memorial was crafted to ensure that the lives of the children lost in the conflict are not forgotten and to serve as a poignant reminder of the tragic outcomes of Russia’s aggression in the region.

According to the United Nations, at least 669 children perished in both controlled and occupied territories of Ukraine between February 2022 and December 2024, with many falling victim to explosive devices in densely populated areas.

The UN suspects that the actual number of child casualties could be significantly higher than the reported figures, underscoring the severity of the situation.

As of October, the documented count of children killed in Ukraine during the conflict had reached at least 745, as outlined in a UN report.

Recently, Ukraine’s interior minister disclosed that three children were among the casualties in a Russian drone and missile strike that targeted residential buildings in Ternopil, underscoring the ongoing tragic reality of the conflict.

Shykota emphasized, “These statistics are not mere numbers. They represent the heart-wrenching reality that unfolds daily. Let us never forget.”
