Midnight Oil Drummer Rob Hirst Dies at 70

Australian music group Midnight Oil revealed on Tuesday the passing of their esteemed drummer and founding member, Rob Hirst, at 70 years old. The band shared on Facebook that after a valiant battle spanning nearly three years, Hirst had passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. They also encouraged donations to charities dedicated to pancreatic cancer research, support, and awareness.

Expressing their deep sorrow, the band’s longstanding members Peter Garrett, Jim Moginie, and Martin Rotsey conveyed their grief over the loss of their colleague. Midnight Oil, which traces its roots back to the early 1970s with members residing in Sydney and Canberra, launched their eponymous debut album in 1978. Subsequently, they released four more albums before the socially conscious international breakthrough of 1987’s “Diesel and Dust.”

Known for their advocacy for Indigenous rights, the band’s hit song “Beds Are Burning” from “Diesel and Dust” topped Canadian charts and reached the top 20 on the U.S. Billboard charts. Hirst, credited with co-writing many songs alongside Moginie, played a significant role in crafting the band’s music. Despite the impact of digital advancements on sales, Midnight Oil continued releasing albums until 2002, when Garrett transitioned into politics.

Hirst remained active in music, including his side project Ghostwriters, amidst Midnight Oil’s intermittent reunions for tours and new albums. Their latest release, “Resist,” in 2022 was supported by a global tour. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Hirst’s talent and spirit, calling him the “real deal.” Tributes poured in from fellow musicians, such as Jimmy Barnes and members of INXS and Hoodoo Gurus, recognizing Hirst’s musical prowess and contributions.

After battling pancreatic cancer and undergoing treatments, Hirst decided to auction his cherished Ludwig drum kit in October, with proceeds benefiting charitable causes, including Indigenous musician support. Reflecting on Midnight Oil’s impact on social justice causes, Hirst highlighted the band’s role alongside other influential artists in advocating for justice and change.

The music world mourns the loss of Rob Hirst, a legendary figure whose drumming and activism left an indelible mark on Australian music history.
