American skiing sensation Mikaela Shiffrin is gearing up for her upcoming races in Colorado next weekend as the current leader of the overall World Cup standings, having clinched victories in two consecutive events.
Shiffrin showcased her dominance in another slalom race on Sunday, securing her second consecutive win in the discipline at the start of the Olympic season. Competing in the Austrian Alps under sunny yet chilly conditions, Shiffrin clocked the fastest time in both runs, finishing in 1 minute and 48.11 seconds, a remarkable 1.23 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Lara Colturi from Albania.
This victory marked Shiffrin’s 66th World Cup win in slalom and her 103rd overall win, setting new records in both categories. The podium lineup mirrored the previous year’s race in Gurgl, with Swiss slalom world champion Camille Rast finishing third.
Shiffrin’s upcoming races include a giant slalom on Saturday and a slalom event the following day in Copper Mountain, a familiar training ground for the U.S. ski team.
After a tight first run where Shiffrin led Colturi by a narrow margin, Shiffrin pushed even harder in the final leg to widen the gap significantly, showcasing exceptional skiing skills. Shiffrin expressed satisfaction with her performance, acknowledging the challenging conditions and the competitive field.
With three events completed, Shiffrin and Colturi now hold the top two positions in both the slalom and overall standings. Shiffrin’s teammate Paula Moltzan currently sits in third place after finishing fifth in Sunday’s race.
Colturi, emerging as Shiffrin’s primary rival in slalom, has been steadily climbing the ranks after a setback due to a knee injury. The Italian-born skier made her World Cup debut for Albania at a young age and has shown remarkable improvement, earning her first career podium last year.
Shiffrin’s strategic focus on slalom and giant slalom events this season, with a possible addition of super-G races, aligns with her preparations for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina. The skiing community continues to be impressed by Shiffrin’s prowess on the slopes, with Colturi and others aspiring to emulate her perfection.
As the competition unfolds, fans eagerly anticipate more thrilling performances from these talented athletes on the international skiing stage.
