Susan Petley experienced a mix of emotions as she crossed the stage during the graduation ceremony at St. Michael’s Adult Catholic High School in Windsor, Ontario. This moment had been a long-held dream, but it was bittersweet for her. Petley, overwhelmed with feelings of hurt, anger, and love, was moved to tears, receiving a heartfelt ovation in the packed gymnasium.
Attending the ceremony to accept her daughter Bethany Anne Coupe’s high school diploma posthumously, Petley expressed pride tinged with sorrow at Bethany’s absence. Holding her other daughter, Cynthia, close by her side, she shared her deep sense of loss at Bethany not being present to witness the milestone.
Bethany, who passed away in April due to cancer, had faced health challenges that made completing her courses a struggle. Despite being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given a limited prognosis, she persevered, studying from her hospital bed with support from the school staff. Petley initially found it hard to comprehend Bethany’s dedication but later understood that her daughter’s determination stemmed from a desire to graduate and give her mother a meaningful gift.
Bethany had aspirations of attending St. Clair College to pursue a career focusing on aiding children or animals. As Petley and Cynthia received the diploma on Bethany’s behalf, six siblings seated in the front row awaited their turn to graduate together. Among them, Rodas Tesfalem Arey, who relocated to Windsor from Sudan with her Eritrean parents, expressed joy and pride in their collective achievement.
The siblings, with career ambitions ranging from mechanics to pharmacy technicians and pilots, reflected on the support and encouragement they received from the school staff. Petley, amidst the emotional evening, emphasized her daughter’s tenacity as a source of inspiration for others striving towards their goals. She imparted a message of resilience, highlighting that no matter the challenges faced, true determination can lead to success, a lesson she learned from her daughter’s unwavering spirit.
