Three individuals accused in the murder case of a popular restaurant owner in Owen Sound, Ontario, have consented to their extradition from Scotland to face trial in Canada. Robert Evans, aged 25, is charged with manslaughter, while his father, Robert Busby Evans, aged 47, and his uncle Barry Evans, aged 54, are facing charges as accessories after the fact.
The extradition process could happen swiftly, according to Robert Currie, an expert in transnational criminal law at Dalhousie University. He mentioned that finalizing the agreement between Canada and the UK on the terms of surrender and the location of the extradition would expedite the transfer of the accused individuals to Canada.
The trio appeared in Edinburgh Sheriff Court and agreed to be extradited to Canada for the criminal charges. Initially, there were indications that the men might contest extradition citing concerns about jail conditions in Ontario violating their human rights. However, they have now consented to the extradition process.
Sharif Rahman, the owner of Curry House in Owen Sound, passed away in August 2023 in a London hospital after being assaulted outside his restaurant when he confronted patrons attempting to leave without paying their bill.
Upon their arrival in Canada, the accused individuals will be treated like any other defendants awaiting trial, receiving support from their respective governments. The reasons behind their decision to consent to extradition remain undisclosed, and it is unclear if a report on Ontario jail conditions was ever submitted as requested by the Scottish Sheriff.
The extradition date has not been set by the court, but once in Canada, the accused will face trial for their alleged involvement in the tragic incident that led to the death of Sharif Rahman.
