Cooney and Becky Hamber face charges of first-degree murder, confinement, assault with zip ties, and neglecting the needs of the boy’s younger brother. The trial, which started in mid-September, involves the tragic death of the 12-year-old boy, referred to as L.L., under the care of Cooney and Hamber in Burlington in December 2022.
During the trial, Cooney defended their care for the boys, highlighting their challenging behavioral issues stemming from past neglect and trauma. She denied any actions contributing to the boy’s death and spoke emotionally about finding him unresponsive and attempting CPR before he passed away.
The defense explained that the boys were isolated in their care and had unique needs, including using zip ties and wetsuits to manage toileting and behavioral challenges. Cooney emphasized that the boys were monitored with cameras, and their confinement in rooms was for safety reasons. The CAS was aware of these methods, although Cooney clarified that they were not concealed.
Regarding the boy’s health, Cooney mentioned his eating disorder and significant weight loss, attributing it to his regurgitation habits. Despite concerns about his deteriorating condition, the couple did not seek immediate medical help, with Cooney mentioning they were waiting for specialized treatment.
