NASA has introduced the team for Artemis III, a space mission in low-Earth orbit involving four astronauts to test key operations for an upcoming moon landing. The announcement was made at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, showcasing three American astronauts and one Italian astronaut.
During the event, NASA administrator Jared Isaacman commended the crew for carrying on the spirit of exploration and receiving the agency’s backing. In addition to the crew, NASA’s partners for the mission, SpaceX and Blue Origin, shared updates on their contributions to the project, with Blue Origin addressing a recent setback.
The Artemis III crew comprises commander Randy Bresnik, a former Marine Corps officer, who expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort involved in the mission. Another member, Andre Douglas, a systems engineer, expressed excitement and appreciation for the opportunity, thanking his family. Luca Parmitano, the European Space Agency astronaut and former ISS commander, expressed humility and gratitude for being selected as the pilot for the mission.
Joining the crew as a mission specialist is Frank Rubio, a U.S. Army Blackhawk pilot and doctor with extensive spaceflight experience. Bob Hines, the backup crew member, is ready to join the team if needed, having participated in the NASA SpaceX Crew-4 mission to the ISS in 2022.
Following the recent explosion of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket, questions arose about the company’s role in the Artemis mission. Blue Origin’s senior vice-president John Couluris reassured that progress continues on the investigation and the vehicle for Artemis III is expected to be ready for launch in 2027.
Artemis III will focus on testing operations in low-Earth orbit, with the crew set to perform critical tasks such as docking, operating the lander, and testing life support systems. The team is making progress in preparing the Space Launch System rocket for the mission, aiming to conduct a wet dress rehearsal by the end of the year.
