Netflix has officially announced the development of a sequel to the highly popular film “KPop Demon Hunters,” which holds the record as the most-watched movie on the platform. This new project signifies an extension of Netflix’s partnership with co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, under a new exclusive multi-year deal for animation.
Maggie Kang, a Korean filmmaker with roots in Toronto, expressed her pride in the audience’s interest in the Korean narrative and characters portrayed in the film. She emphasized that there is much more to explore in the world they have created, indicating that this is just the beginning.
The original musical film, animated by Sony Pictures Animation, revolves around the K-pop girl trio Huntrix — Rumi, Mira, and Zoey — who lead double lives as demon hunters alongside their superstardom. The movie’s hit song “Golden,” performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The film has garnered critical acclaim and accolades, including awards at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. Additionally, it has received two Oscar nominations for best animated feature and best original song.
Notably, the song “Golden” won a Grammy for best song written for visual media, marking the first Grammy ever awarded to a K-Pop track. The movie’s success has been further amplified by its soundtrack, which continues to resonate globally.
Looking ahead to the sequel, Chris Appelhans emphasized the importance of having a clear creative vision from the outset to ensure a meaningful and engaging continuation of the story. He stressed the need to create something that resonates with the creators and the audience alike.
The announcement of the sequel comes after the original film broke numerous viewing records on Netflix and maintained strong viewership for its lyric videos. The anticipation for the upcoming installment is high, as fans eagerly await the next chapter in the story of “KPop Demon Hunters.”
