The New York Giants made a significant decision on Monday by terminating head coach Brian Daboll, who hails from Welland, Ontario. This move came as the team’s record fell to 2-8 after a defeat against Chicago. In response, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was appointed as the interim head coach. The decision to relieve Daboll of his duties was announced by team owners John Mara and Steve Tisch following a disappointing 24-20 loss to the Bears, where the Giants squandered another late lead.
Acknowledging the recent underperformance and fan frustration, Mara and Tisch expressed their commitment to enhancing the team’s performance. General manager Joe Schoen will spearhead the search for a new head coach while keeping the rest of Daboll’s coaching staff intact, including defensive coordinator Shane Bowen.
The Giants have faced a four-game losing streak since their victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last month, notably suffering a historic collapse against the Denver Broncos. Daboll, who led the team to the playoffs in his first season as head coach, saw his tenure end with a 20-40-1 record. His departure marks the Giants’ third midseason coaching change in nearly a century.
In light of these developments, Kafka steps into the interim head coach role amidst a challenging season marked by injuries to key players like Jaxson Dart, Russell Wilson, Cam Skattebo, and Malik Nabers. Schoen, who has been GM for four seasons, received a vote of confidence from ownership despite the team’s lackluster performance.
Looking ahead, Daboll’s vast coaching experience positions him for potential opportunities in the NFL next season. However, his future with the Giants is definitively over, as the team sets its sights on a fresh start under new leadership.
