NHL standout Brad Marchand surprised attendees at a Halifax U18 hockey match by stepping in to support a close friend who recently lost his young daughter. JP MacCallum, head coach of the March and Mill Company Hunters, is currently on leave following the passing of his 10-year-old daughter, Selah Panacci-MacCallum, after her battle with cancer. Despite being actively involved in the NHL season with the Florida Panthers, Marchand didn’t hesitate to return home and assist MacCallum on the sidelines.
Marchand expressed his deep sorrow over Selah’s passing, describing her as a remarkable and loving individual who left a lasting impact on many lives. He emphasized the importance of being there for MacCallum and his family during this difficult time. Over a thousand individuals gathered at the Halifax Forum to show their support for the grieving family.
Having known JP for 25 years, Marchand credited him for his support and influence in his life, highlighting their close bond as almost like brothers. The Panthers fully supported Marchand’s decision to be with his friend during this period. The hockey game served as a fundraiser, with proceeds from various activities, including a bake sale and jersey auction, going to Selah’s family.
Paul Graham, president of the U18 Major Hockey League, commended the overwhelming support shown by the community, particularly the hockey players and alumni from Nova Scotia. He praised Marchand for his commitment to his roots and for standing by those who have helped him along the way. The event showcased the unity and solidarity within the Nova Scotia hockey community.
