“Nova Scotia’s Beloved ‘Eyeball Rocks’ to be Removed”

A pair of prominent boulders painted to resemble eyes that overlook Nova Scotia’s Highway 103 are set to be removed as the province moves forward with expanding the highway. The artistic display, known as the “eyeball rocks,” was created by Jason Smith and his friend Neil in October 2017. Originally, the rocks were intended to feature emojis but were transformed into eyes after a chance observation. The eyes quickly became a cherished unofficial landmark along the highway.

Despite efforts to preserve the painted boulders, plans to blast them have been underway for some time. The decision has sparked mixed reactions from the community, with some expressing sadness over the loss of the unique artwork while others remain hopeful for future artistic opportunities along the highway.

Gary Andrea, a spokesperson for the Department of Public Works, confirmed that the rocks will be demolished to ensure the safety of drivers as construction progresses. While Jason Smith acknowledges the upcoming removal with disappointment, he appreciates the support and joy the painted rocks have brought to passersby over the years.

As the iconic “eyeball rocks” face their imminent demise, Smith and Neil reflect on the legacy they have created, emphasizing that the memories and photographs will endure even after the physical rocks are gone. The artists, who had chosen to remain anonymous until now, have shared their story as a testament to the joy and laughter their creation has inspired in the community.
