Former U.S. President Barack Obama has enlisted a lineup of famous musicians to perform at the inauguration of his new cultural hub. Among the artists set to grace the stage at the grand opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s South Side are Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Bono and the Edge from U2, Eddie Vedder, and Bruce Springsteen.
The livestreamed debut of the center, which features a museum, library, and sports arena with an NBA-standard court, is scheduled for June 18 at noon ET. This event precedes the public opening on Juneteenth, a U.S. federal holiday.
In contrast, U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to be absent from the event. Trump criticized the center earlier this year, referring to it as “Obama’s badly delayed, and tremendously over-budget, ‘library.'”
Trump has been focusing on the administration’s broader Freedom 250 program this summer, dedicated to commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary. Notably, a White House-hosted Freedom 250 UFC event took place on Trump’s 80th birthday, where fighter Josh Hokit made disparaging remarks about Michelle Obama.
Critics have accused Trump of using presidential events and public spaces to promote his political image, especially with his decision to term the celebration as a rally without involving the bipartisan committee, America 250, responsible for honoring the anniversary.
Several performers withdrew from the Great American State Fair, another anniversary event, due to their ties to Trump. Artists Bret Michaels, the Commodores, Fab Morvan, Young MC, and Martina McBride canceled their appearances citing evolving circumstances not initially agreed upon.
Despite these changes, performers like Flo Rida and Vanilla Ice are still expected to feature at the event. Trump suggested the cancellation of the original event concept following withdrawals, proposing a kickoff rally on June 24 on the National Mall where he would headline as the “Number One Attraction anywhere in the World.”
Meanwhile, America 250 is proceeding with its own festivities, including the America’s Block Party concert on July 4, showcasing artists like the Smashing Pumpkins, Queen Latifah, and Chris Stapleton.
The opening of the Obama Presidential Center occurs shortly after a federal court ordered the removal of Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center’s facade. Though the name has been eliminated, it remains obscured by a tarp.
The events surrounding Obama and Trump’s initiatives indicate a potential rivalry for attention, according to Clodagh Harrington, an expert on American history and politics. Harrington emphasized the high cultural legitimacy and global respect associated with the Obamas compared to the Trumps.
The Obama Presidential Center has faced criticism for its size and design. Some have described the building as imposing and lacking transparency, while others have questioned the absence of a National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) facility on the premises.
Anticipated to attract around 1 million visitors annually, the center’s 20-acre campus boasts amenities such as a public library branch, an NBA-grade basketball court, a garden, and a playground.
