“One Battle After Another” Dominates 98th Academy Awards

The film “One Battle After Another” emerged as the standout victor at this year’s Academy Awards, securing the prestigious accolade for best picture along with five additional awards. Initially, Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” had taken the lead with an unprecedented 16 nominations, triumphing in four categories.

Michael B. Jordan, the lead of “Sinners,” clinched the best actor award, marking his first win on his debut nomination and earning a rousing standing ovation from the crowd. Additionally, Jessie Buckley, acclaimed for her portrayal of William Shakespeare’s wife in “Hamnet,” continued her award-winning streak from the 2026 season by claiming the Oscar, following previous wins at the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, Actor, and BAFTA Film awards.

Amy Madigan secured the best supporting actress award for her role in the film “Weapons,” while Sean Penn received the best supporting actor Oscar for his performance in “One Battle After Another,” marking his third Academy Award win.

Canadian talents also shone brightly at the event. Toronto director Maggie Kang accepted the Oscar for best animated feature for “KPop Demon Hunters,” while Canadian production designers Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau of Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” took home their own Oscar trophies. Additionally, Canadians Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey shared the win for makeup and hairstyling for “Frankenstein.”

Apart from the wins in best picture and best supporting actor categories, “One Battle After Another” delivered Paul Thomas Anderson his first-ever awards for best adapted screenplay and directing. The film also scooped up awards for editing and casting, the latter being a new Academy Award category introduced after a 24-year hiatus.

Meanwhile, “Sinners” grabbed four awards, with Ryan Coogler winning for best original screenplay and Autumn Durald Arkapaw making history by becoming the first racialized woman to win the best cinematography award.

Furthermore, “Frankenstein,” which was filmed in Toronto, secured three awards. The winners of the 98th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, include:
