In December 2022, Deren Akyeam-Pong, 26, has admitted to nine charges, including kidnapping, assault, and gun-related offenses, in connection with the abduction of Aiden Pleterski, known as Ontario’s “Crypto King.” The specifics of his admission, as outlined in an agreed statement of facts, are currently under a temporary publication ban.
The trial for two other individuals implicated in the kidnapping was scheduled to commence, complete with jury selection. However, following Akyeam-Pong’s confession, the lawyers of the other defendants sought a postponement, which was granted by Justice Gillian Roberts. A new trial date is pending.
Among the accused set to face trial is Akil Heywood, 41, who allegedly lost a substantial sum of money to Pleterski and now faces charges linked to the purported kidnapping, along with allegations of extortion. Heywood has maintained his innocence. Alfredo Paladino will be jointly tried with Heywood on charges of kidnapping, extortion, possession of firearms, and assault.
A significant bankruptcy case involving Pleterski has been closely monitored by CBC since 2022, stemming from investors who claim to have lost over $40 million entrusted to Pleterski for cryptocurrency and foreign exchange investments. A bankruptcy inquiry in Toronto has recovered approximately $3 million for about 160 investors, unveiling that Pleterski misused close to $16 million on personal expenses such as private jet rentals, lavish vacations, and luxury vehicles.
Heywood, a prominent figure in Pleterski’s bankruptcy saga, was arrested in July 2023. Initially named one of five inspectors chosen by fellow investors to represent their interests in the bankruptcy process, Heywood’s involvement took a turn with his apprehension.
In 2023, upon learning of Heywood’s arrest, CBC journalists received a 12-minute video where Pleterski, visibly injured, detailed the handling of investors’ funds and issued apologies. Pleterski’s legal counsel contended that while some of the video’s content was accurate, Pleterski was coerced by his purported captors to make certain statements.
Subsequently, in May 2024, Pleterski was arrested and charged with fraud and money laundering related to investor funds. His trial is scheduled for October of the following year, with these charges yet to be litigated in court.
