OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, announced that the platform will start allowing mature content, including erotica, for adult users who verify their age on ChatGPT beginning in December. Altman emphasized the importance of treating adult users with respect and allowing them access to such content within the platform’s guidelines.
Initially, OpenAI had implemented strict restrictions on ChatGPT to address mental health concerns. However, Altman acknowledged that these restrictions limited the chatbot’s utility and appeal to users without mental health issues. With advancements in mental health tools, OpenAI can now relax these restrictions while ensuring user safety.
In the near future, OpenAI will introduce a new version of ChatGPT that enables users to customize the chatbot’s tone and personality according to their preferences. Altman highlighted that users can make ChatGPT respond in a more human-like manner, incorporate emojis, or simulate a friendly interaction, emphasizing user choice over maximizing platform usage.
This development aligns with Meta’s recent announcement of enhanced restrictions for Instagram users under 18, filtering out content exceeding PG-13 standards. OpenAI has also introduced parental controls for ChatGPT to prevent inappropriate conversations, such as flirting or discussions on suicide or self-harm, with individuals under 18. These measures were implemented following a tragic incident involving a teenager who interacted with ChatGPT, leading to legal action by the family.
OpenAI is working on an age-prediction system to estimate users’ ages based on their interactions with ChatGPT, allowing for tailored restrictions for those believed to be under 18. These initiatives aim to balance user freedom and safety within the platform.
