Ostrich Death Amidst Legal Battle Over Cull Order

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has reported the death of an ostrich from a British Columbia flock that recently received a reprieve from a cull order by the Supreme Court of Canada. The ostrich at Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, B.C., had a pre-existing condition affecting its left leg and mobility, and despite ongoing treatment by the owners, its health deteriorated rapidly over two days, leading to its demise on Saturday.

Katie Pasitney, a spokesperson for the farm, confirmed the ostrich’s death in a Facebook video and accused the CFIA of animal cruelty, alleging mishandling of electrolytes. The CFIA, in response, stated that they had been following the therapy regime provided by the owners, including administering medication and electrolyte fluids.

The cull order was initially issued due to an avian flu outbreak at the farm, but the owners contested the decision, arguing that the surviving birds were healthy and had scientific value. Following the last-minute stay granted by the Supreme Court of Canada, the CFIA will comply with the order and submit a response to the High Court while maintaining control of the ostrich enclosure at the farm near Edgewood, B.C.
