“P.E.I. Considers Legalizing Combat Sports: Boost for Athletes & Economy”

The province of Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) is considering legalizing combat sport fighting competitions, including boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA). Currently, P.E.I.’s criminal code prohibits prize fighting, where individuals engage in combat with their hands or feet. However, the government is seeking feedback on potential legislation to regulate both professional and amateur boxing, kick-boxing, and MMA.

Neighboring provinces like Nova Scotia and New Brunswick already permit tournaments in these sports. Matt MacGrath, the owner of Renzo Gracie Gym in Charlottetown, expressed that it is high time for P.E.I. to follow suit. MacGrath highlighted the inconvenience faced by fighters from the region who have to travel to other provinces to compete, emphasizing the desire for local opportunities for fighters to showcase their skills to their families and communities.

Moreover, MacGrath emphasized the economic benefits that prize fighting could bring to the province, citing potential revenues for hotels, restaurants, and nightlife. Zack Bell, the minister of fisheries, tourism, sport, and culture in P.E.I., echoed the sentiment that the proposed legislation is long overdue. He emphasized the importance of ensuring participant safety, proper oversight of events, and aligning with industry standards observed in other provinces.

Bell also recognized the tourism potential associated with combat sports, noting the increasing popularity of MMA globally. He highlighted the need to remove barriers that prevent locals from engaging in or attending such events within the province. Both Bell and MacGrath emphasized the need to view MMA and combat sports as legitimate athletic pursuits, underscoring the rigorous training and safety measures in place during competitions.

Overall, the push to legalize combat sports in P.E.I. aims to provide opportunities for local athletes, boost economic growth through event hosting, and ensure the safety and regulation of such competitions.
