A young basketball talent from Prince Edward Island is set to elevate her game and potentially her athletic future as she prepares to attend university next year. Alex Newson has recently committed to studying at the State University of New York at Albany, where she will be joining the Albany Great Danes basketball team.
Newson will be making history as the first-ever basketball player from P.E.I. to compete in NCAA Division I basketball. Expressing her excitement, she aims to inspire other aspiring basketball players, especially young girls in the province, highlighting the growing interest in the sport locally.
Her basketball journey began at the age of five, and she later moved to Ontario before grade 11 to attend King’s Christian Collegiate, where she could immerse herself in year-round basketball training within a competitive league.
Newson’s dedication and progress led her to the realization that playing at the NCAA Division I level was within reach. Supported by her parents, who have been instrumental in her journey, she made the decision to commit to the University at Albany after a campus visit, eager to pursue both basketball and biology studies.
The upcoming summer will mark the start of Newson’s training with the Albany team, a significant step towards her basketball aspirations. With ambitions to make a positive impact on the team, win games, and continuously enhance her skills, she remains open to the possibilities that her basketball career may unfold, including the potential of playing professionally with the guidance of her coaches.
Prior to fully immersing herself in her basketball pursuits, Newson looks forward to completing her final year of high school before embarking on her collegiate journey at the University at Albany.
