A proposal by the municipality to rename a street in Halifax has sparked conversations among residents, leading to mixed feelings as some believe it will erase a significant part of the street’s history.
The decision to rename Lynwood Drive in the Rockingham neighborhood was made by the city due to concerns about safety and confusion caused by having three Lynwood Drives in the municipality, including locations in Dartmouth and Brookside.
While the Rockingham location was chosen for renaming because it has the fewest residents compared to the other two locations, some residents argue that the historical significance and community ties of the street should also be taken into account.
One resident, Patricia Arab, whose family has lived on the street for generations, expressed her sadness at the potential loss of the street’s heritage, which has been a significant place for the early Lebanese immigrant community in Halifax.
Arab has launched an online petition to preserve the Lynwood Drive name, receiving over 350 signatures in support of retaining the street’s identity.
Residents in the area were given the chance to propose new names for the street, with options such as Bennys Way and Rockingham Heights. However, the suggestion of “Meow Drive” has stirred discussions among neighbors, with many expressing their disapproval of the idea.
The city council will ultimately decide on the new name for the street, considering factors like historical significance and public safety. Councillor Kathryn Morse highlighted that the renaming effort is part of a broader initiative to reduce duplicate street names in the municipality.
The renaming process is expected to proceed in the coming year, with the municipality offering free mail redirection services for residents affected by the change. The decision will be based on feedback from residents and approval from the council.
