Rob Base, one of the members of the renowned Harlem hip-hop duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, has passed away at the age of 59 after battling cancer. Born Robert Ginyard, he was famous for the hit track “It Takes Two” in 1988, which combined hip-hop and house music, playing a significant role in popularizing both genres.
A statement on his Instagram account announced his demise, praising Rob’s music, vibrant persona, and lasting impact on a global audience. In addition to his musical contributions, he was remembered as a devoted father, family man, friend, and influential figure in the creative realm.
His partner in music, DJ E-Z Rock, whose real name was Rodney (Skip) Bryce, passed away in 2014 at 46 due to complications related to diabetes. The duo, who first crossed paths as fifth graders in Harlem, drew inspiration from the success of another local group, Crash Crew, and eventually signed with Profile Records in 1987, an early player in the hip-hop industry.
Their breakthrough single, “It Takes Two,” soared to No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Club Songs chart and made waves in the music scene. The track has been sampled by various artists like Snoop Dogg and the Black Eyed Peas, featured in multiple movies, and achieved platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America. Following this success, their subsequent release, “Get on the Dance Floor,” also enjoyed significant popularity on the club songs chart.
