“Roughriders’ Special Teams Coach Maugeri Empowers Players for Success”

As Thursday’s practice wrapped up, Kent Maugeri, the special teams coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, was actively moving across the field. Maugeri is responsible for managing the kicking and return aspects of the team, involving a significant portion of the roster.

Reflecting on his role, Maugeri expressed his focus on being a top-notch teacher and empowering players to excel on the field. He emphasized the importance of setting high standards while equipping the team with the necessary skills for success.

During games, Maugeri collaborates with head coach Corey Mace on critical decisions, highlighting the emphasis placed on special teams performance by the Roughriders. Mace praised the dedication of players who go above and beyond, whether they are special team specialists or starters from offense or defense.

Having joined the Roughriders in 2016, Maugeri stands as the longest-tenured member of the coaching staff. Initially hired as an offensive assistant by Chris Jones from Lindenwood University, Maugeri was later promoted by former coach Craig Dickenson to lead the special teams in 2022.

Mace commended Maugeri, expressing deep admiration for his coaching style and the impact he has on the special teams unit. Despite working under three different head coaches in ten seasons, Maugeri’s resilience and coaching prowess have earned him respect within the organization.

When asked about the unique characteristics of his unit compared to the offense and defense, Maugeri described them as “junkyard dogs,” emphasizing the physical and high-intensity nature of their play style. He rewards standout special teams performers with a chain reminiscent of the iconic professional wrestler Junkyard Dog after victories.

As the Riders gear up for the Grey Cup showdown against the Montreal Alouettes, Maugeri aims to celebrate a successful performance by his special teams unit with the symbolic chain presentation, continuing to embody the team’s spirit and dedication.
