Russia Blocks FaceTime and Roblox Amid Crackdown

Russia has recently taken steps to block Apple’s FaceTime video-calling app and the U.S. children’s gaming platform Roblox, according to the state communications watchdog. The restrictions are part of an ongoing crackdown on foreign tech platforms. Russian authorities have accused FaceTime of being used for criminal activities and Roblox of distributing extremist materials and “LGBT propaganda.”

These actions are in line with previous restrictions on Google’s YouTube, Meta’s WhatsApp, and the Telegram messaging service. While critics view these measures as censorship and a tightening of state control over private communications, Russian officials claim they are necessary law enforcement actions. The Russian government has even introduced a state-backed alternative app called Max, which critics fear could be used for surveillance.

The communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, justified the FaceTime block by stating that the app is allegedly being used to organize terrorist activities, recruit individuals for criminal acts, and perpetrate fraud against Russian citizens. However, no evidence was provided to support these claims.

Despite the lack of evidence, Apple has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the FaceTime block. Moscow residents attempting to use FaceTime have reported receiving an on-screen message indicating that the user is unavailable. Roskomnadzor has also ramped up efforts to restrict access to Western media and tech platforms that allegedly violate Russian laws.

In a separate move, Roblox was also banned by Roskomnadzor for disseminating extremist content and “LGBT propaganda.” A spokesperson for Roblox emphasized the platform’s commitment to safety and proactive measures to prevent harmful content. Notably, Roblox has faced bans in multiple countries due to concerns about child safety and inappropriate content.

Russia’s stance on LGBTQ rights has been controversial, with the country labeling the “international LGBT movement” as extremist in 2023. This designation has led to severe repercussions for LGBTQ individuals and their supporters within Russia.
