“Russia Launches Deadly Missile Assault on Ukraine”

In a significant overnight assault, Russia launched a barrage of drones and missiles at Ukraine, causing the death of at least four individuals in the capital city. This attack marked the second instance in the ongoing four-year conflict where a new hypersonic missile was utilized, striking western Ukraine as a clear signal to Kyiv’s NATO partners.

The assault, which included the deployment of the nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile, occurred following reports of progress in discussions between Ukraine and its allies on bolstering defenses against potential Russian aggression if a U.S.-led peace agreement is reached. European leaders condemned the attack as “escalatory and unacceptable,” with the EU’s top foreign policy envoy criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s response to diplomacy as “more missiles and destruction.”

Simultaneously, tensions between Moscow and Washington escalated after Russia criticized the U.S. seizure of an oil tanker in the North Atlantic. President Donald Trump expressed support for stringent sanctions against Moscow, as Russia remained firm on its demands concerning Ukraine.

Ukrainian authorities confirmed that the attack in Kyiv resulted in four fatalities and over 25 injuries, with essential services, such as power and heat, being restored to public facilities by municipal authorities. Moreover, the Qatari Embassy in Kyiv sustained damage during the assault, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighting Qatar’s role in prisoner exchanges.

In a separate incident, remnants of the Oreshnik missile were identified in Ukraine’s Lviv region, with the missile originating from Russia’s Kapustin Yar test range. The attack targeted civilian infrastructure, prompting strong reactions from Ukrainian residents who emphasized their resilience amidst ongoing hostilities.

Russia’s Defence Ministry attributed the assault to a supposed Ukrainian drone strike on one of Putin’s residences, a claim refuted by both Trump and Ukraine. The Oreshnik missile, known for its destructive capacity, has raised concerns among Western countries supporting Ukraine.

Ukraine announced plans to seek international action in response to the missile attack, including urgent sessions at the UN Security Council and the Ukraine-NATO Council. The gravity of the situation near EU and NATO borders was underscored by Ukrainian officials, who demanded robust responses to Russia’s actions.

Leaders from various countries, including Britain, France, Germany, and Canada, condemned the attack, labeling it as a dangerous escalation that jeopardized regional stability. The international community called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, emphasizing the urgent need for peace in the region amidst heightened tensions.
