Sandy Brondello to Lead Toronto Tempo as Head Coach

Sandy Brondello is on track to become the inaugural head coach of the Toronto Tempo basketball team. Following the conclusion of her contract with the New York Liberty, where she guided the team to their first WNBA title in 2024, Brondello’s tenure was not extended due to a season marred by injuries that resulted in an early playoff exit.

Brondello will now take the helm of the expansion team, the Tempo, who are scheduled to debut on the court next season. The seasoned coach was also a contender for the head coaching position with the Dallas Wings, while the Seattle Storm is also seeking a new head coach.

Initial reports on Brondello’s upcoming role were disclosed by The Next. During her four-year stint with New York, Brondello amassed a record of 107-53, making her the winningest coach in the franchise’s history. Despite a strong start with a nine-game winning streak, the Liberty faced challenges in the following months as injuries impacted their performance.

Prior to her time with New York, Brondello steered the Phoenix Mercury to a championship during her eight-year tenure with the team. She joined the Liberty in 2022 after guiding the Mercury to the WNBA Finals in 2021.

Although New York fell short in the 2023 finals against Las Vegas, they clinched the championship last year with a thrilling Game 5 overtime triumph over Minnesota.
