Saskatchewan Roughriders enthusiasts will soon have the opportunity to prepare food and indulge in their own alcoholic beverages outside Mosaic Stadium, following the unveiling of the promised tailgating legislation by the province. The recently introduced Tailgating Act modifies the Alcohol Control Regulations of the province to permit tailgating in a parking lot adjacent to the Roughriders stadium exclusively during home games.
CEO and President of the Roughriders, Craig Reynolds, emphasized that the initiative, allowing tailgating for season ticket-holders solely, is not aimed at enhancing the team’s financial performance but rather as a gesture of appreciation to the fans. Reynolds anticipates high demand from season ticket members for the pregame festivities leading up to the game.
The approach is to commence with a “manageable” crowd and potentially scale up in the future, as outlined by Reynolds. If the legislation is approved, supervision of the tailgating space will be managed by staff, likely from Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL). Vehicle entry will be regulated, and strict guidelines for behavior will be enforced, as noted by the province.
Alana Ross, the minister overseeing the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, confirmed that the regulations will necessitate a permit and close collaboration with SLGA. Ross expressed confidence in the collaborative effort to ensure a successful experience for Roughriders fans, the team, and the City of Regina.
Reynolds mentioned that the provincial legislation was prompted by the Roughriders’ engagement with the government earlier this year. He also highlighted ongoing discussions with CFL counterparts in Calgary and Edmonton regarding their tailgating strategies, with a plan to explore additional markets.
The new rules are set to be in place for the 2026 CFL season, initially limited to events at Mosaic Stadium for Saskatchewan Roughriders home games. Potential expansion of eligibility beyond the 2026 CFL season has been indicated by the province.
