“Shang-Chi Star Simu Liu Challenges Hollywood Biases”

Canadian actor Simu Liu, known for his role in Marvel productions, has expressed frustration with the Hollywood industry and its treatment of Asian-led projects. Despite the proven success of recent Asian-centered films like “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Minari,” Liu believes that such projects are still viewed as risky endeavors due to inherent biases.

Liu, who starred in the Marvel film “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which grossed $432 million globally, emphasized that Asian-led projects have been both critically acclaimed and financially successful. He highlighted the need for more diversity in decision-making roles within the industry to combat this perception of risk.

While maintaining a busy schedule with various roles in voice acting, music, and hosting, Liu feels that securing leading roles in Hollywood has been challenging. He attributes this to studios retreating to familiar, less risky choices during times of uncertainty, despite the changing landscape of diversity in the entertainment industry.

In his latest project, “The Copenhagen Test,” a dystopian spy thriller where Liu plays the lead role of Alexander Hale, the character’s immigrant identity resonates with Liu’s personal experiences. The series, which explores themes of identity and suspicion, premieres on Showcase and streams on StackTV.

Liu believes that the recent decline in Asian representation on screen is a setback in the progress made towards diversity. He points out the reluctance of studios to greenlight sequels for successful Asian-led films like “Crazy Rich Asians,” showcasing a disconnect between decision-makers and audience preferences.

Looking ahead, Liu remains committed to his craft, with upcoming projects including a return to the Marvel universe in “Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday” and his Broadway debut in “Oh, Mary!” He sees acting as a way to connect with audiences and navigate the challenges of the industry creatively.

Despite the obstacles, Liu remains grateful for the opportunities he has and emphasizes the importance of staying true to his passion for acting amid the uncertainties of Hollywood.
