“Sikhs for Justice to Hold Ottawa Referendum for Khalistan”

Sikhs for Justice, formerly led by Hardeep Singh Nijjar until his tragic death in 2023, is set to conduct a referendum in Ottawa on Sunday advocating for an independent Sikh Punjab, known as “Khalistan.” The timing coincides with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s planned meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 summit in South Africa.

This non-binding vote marks the group’s seventh referendum in Canada since September 2022, starting with the initial vote in Brampton, Ont., and subsequent rounds in Surrey, B.C., followed by sessions in Mississauga, Ont., and Calgary in 2024. Despite claims of significant turnout, the exact numbers remain unverified by CBC News.

Although Ottawa has a smaller Sikh community compared to Toronto and Vancouver, organizers anticipate attendees from Montreal and other regions for the referendum event.

The Indian government has previously condemned the referendum movement as a challenge to its sovereignty. However, in response to inquiries, the Indian High Commission maintained a neutral stance, emphasizing that the referendum is a Canadian initiative.

Inderjeet Singh Gosal now leads Sikhs for Justice in Canada following Nijjar’s assassination. Gosal, who faces firearms charges after a recent arrest, has declined security protection amid credible threats to his life. Despite the risks, he remains committed to the cause and will participate in the referendum.

Security measures have been implemented for the event, including a change in venue to ensure accessibility and safety for voters. Gosal expressed concerns about the ongoing violence and extortion within the Sikh community, criticizing the premature decision to restore diplomatic relations with India.

The RCMP’s warning about clandestine activities by Indian diplomats in Canada, posted on their website since October 2024, underscores the complex dynamics surrounding the referendum and the broader geopolitical implications. Gosal highlighted the persistent challenges and threats faced by the Sikh community, indicating a worsening situation despite previous engagements with law enforcement agencies.
