A man from South Korea is currently cycling across North America, starting his journey in British Columbia and aiming to reach Montreal with the support of kind Canadians. Seongmin Ji, dressed in black with a navy blue toque, is riding through the Sea to Sky Highway, showcasing his unique bicycle adorned with license plates from various places like Alaska, Utah, Guatemala, and British Columbia.
At 28 years old, Ji has already cycled the entire west coast of South America, Central America, and North America. His current goal is to cover over 5,000 kilometers to reach Montreal in a span of two months, seeking personal growth and hoping to inspire others along the way.
Embarking on his route from Ushuaia, Argentina, Ji made his way to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, before hitchhiking to Kitwanga, B.C., and then cycling down to Squamish. Despite no formal training, Ji is determined to push his limits and spread positivity through his journey.
Throughout his travels in Canada, Ji has been relying on the hospitality of strangers who have welcomed him into their homes. Utilizing platforms like Warm Showers, a website connecting cyclists with locals, Ji expresses gratitude for the generosity and warmth he has encountered, particularly in British Columbia.
During his stay in Smithers, B.C., Ji impressed his host, Rory Luxmoore, with his maturity and passion for adventure. Luxmoore commended Ji’s humble demeanor and peaceful approach to his remarkable accomplishments. Joining local cyclists for rides and immersing himself in the community, Ji appreciates the welcoming attitude of British Columbians towards cyclists.
Fueling his journey with podcasts and peanut-butter sandwiches, Ji draws motivation from the kindness he has received along the way. Inspired by Canadian icon Terry Fox, Ji envisions giving back through a charity run in South Korea upon completing his current cycling expedition.
