“Study Links Fracking to Cancer Surge in Dawson Creek”

Researchers presented findings to the Dawson Creek city council concerning the potential negative health impacts of oil and gas operations in northeastern British Columbia on February 9. Dr. Ulrike Meyer, a long-time family physician in Dawson Creek, highlighted an increase in rare cancers that she attributes to exposure to contaminants from nearby fracking activities. She emphasized the responsibility of health providers to safeguard public health and raise awareness about potential risks.

In the summer of 2023, 25 lung biopsies conducted in Dawson Creek revealed that 23 of them tested positive for cancer. Additionally, between 2016 and 2018, ten individuals were diagnosed with idiopathic interstitial fibrosis, a lung condition with unknown origins. Dr. Meyer expressed concern over the high incidence of this condition in a population of just over 12,000 residents.

Fracking operations, which commenced in the early 2000s in the Peace region, have raised alarm bells regarding their potential health impacts. Dr. Meyer estimated that around 30,000 wells are currently operating in the area. Dr. Élyse Caron-Beaudoin, a researcher from the University of Toronto, and Dr. Margaret McGregor from the University of British Columbia echoed these concerns, emphasizing the harmful effects of fracking chemicals on human health, including cancer, respiratory issues, and adverse birth outcomes.

Research conducted over the past decade has shown elevated levels of industry-related chemicals in pregnant women and the general population in northeastern British Columbia. Studies have also indicated increased risks of various health issues, such as impaired fetal growth, premature birth, congenital abnormalities, childhood cancer, and heart disease, in populations residing near fracking sites.

Councilor Jerimy Earl acknowledged the need for a thoughtful discussion on the matter, considering the economic dependence of many residents on the oil and gas industry for their livelihoods. He assured that the city has installed additional air quality monitors to monitor potential risks and pledged transparency in sharing data with the public. The researchers plan to continue investigating the health implications of fracking in the Peace region, aiming to raise awareness and find ways to mitigate the associated health risks.
