“The Pitch” Documentary: Birth of Northern Super League

A new documentary sheds light on the birth of the Northern Super League, just in time for its inaugural post-season. “The Pitch,” directed by Michele Hozer, delves into the development of the women’s professional league led by co-founders Diana Matheson and Thomas Gilbert. The documentary, which commenced in late 2022, chronicles the journey from the conceptualization of Project 8 to the league’s launch earlier this year.

Throughout the documentary, the challenges and uncertainties faced by Matheson and Gilbert are prominently featured. Matheson expresses her frustration with the prolonged period of uncertainty, emphasizing the toll it has taken on them. The relentless dedication of Matheson is highlighted, with scenes showing her working continuously, even in a car, as captured by her wife Anastasia Bucsis, who also serves as an associate producer of the film.

Despite the hurdles, the documentary captures the triumphant moment of the league’s successful launch, showcasing the determination of Matheson, the unwavering support from Bucsis, and the strategic thinking of Gilbert. The decision to document the league’s creation stemmed from Matheson and Gilbert’s desire, with Hozer being introduced to them by Nathalie Cook, a former TSN executive who advised Project 8 in its early stages.

Hozer, known for her acclaimed works such as “Shake Hands with The Devil: The Journey of Romeo Dallaire” and “Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould,” faced her own challenges in securing financing for the project. Despite initial expectations of strong backing for Project 8, Hozer was struck by the realization that former players like Matheson were spearheading the league’s establishment.

The documentary features insights from various interviews, including former players like Amy Walsh, who shares her experience of being forced to retire due to motherhood constraints imposed by Canada Soccer. The governing body receives criticism for its restrictive policies and controversial marketing deals, with Matheson and other players expressing disappointment and frustration.

As the documentary captures the league’s journey to fruition, it portrays the determination and resilience of those involved, culminating in a significant milestone for women’s soccer. The challenges faced along the way serve as a testament to the perseverance and dedication of Matheson, Gilbert, and the entire team behind the Northern Super League.
