James Ransone, known for his role as Ziggy Sobotka in the popular TV series “The Wire,” has tragically passed away at the age of 46. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed that Ransone died by suicide on Friday.
Apart from his memorable portrayal of Sobotka, a dock worker and minor member of a crime syndicate on “The Wire,” Ransone also showcased his talent in other TV shows like “Bosch,” “Poker Face,” and the miniseries “Generation Kill,” which depicted a Rolling Stone journalist embedded with American troops in Baghdad during 2003.
In addition to his television work, Ransone’s filmography included several horror films such as “It: Chapter Two,” “The Black Phone,” “Black Phone 2,” and installments from the “Sinister” franchise. He shared insights about his career journey in a 2016 Interview magazine feature, reflecting on his transition from dropping out of film school to finding fulfillment in acting, particularly through his role in “Generation Kill.”
Ransone candidly discussed overcoming addiction struggles before filming “Generation Kill,” a milestone that not only impacted his personal life but also deepened his understanding of his family background, given his father’s military service. Following his untimely death, heartfelt messages poured in from Ransone’s loved ones, including his wife, Jamie McPhee, and fellow actor Wendell Pierce.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support Ransone’s wife and children in the wake of this tragedy. Representatives for Ransone were contacted by The Associated Press for comment but did not immediately respond.
