“Toronto woman sentenced to life for killing sons”

A 27-year-old woman from Toronto has been handed a life sentence with no chance of parole for 18 years after she admitted to murdering her two young sons in her Scarborough apartment in December 2023. Vanessa Collias pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Toronto.

The tragic incident occurred following the death of her husband, who was 47 years older than her, from leukemia just days after being diagnosed. Dr. Sumeeta Chatterjee, a forensic psychiatrist, revealed that Collias expressed feelings of being “broken” and “absolutely alone,” longing for her family to be reunited in heaven.

After the killings, Collias attempted suicide and was left paralyzed. She left notes for the police, apologizing for her actions and expressing regret that her suicide attempt was unsuccessful. The boys were found side by side in the apartment without vital signs and were later pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to the psychiatric report, Collias was overwhelmed by the sudden loss of her husband, but did not suffer from a major mental disorder that would have affected her ability to understand her actions. The court, following a joint recommendation from the Crown and defense, sentenced Collias to 18 years in prison before being eligible for parole.
