“Tragic Death Highlights Concerns Over Spit Hood Use”

On the evening of Christmas Eve in 2022, Sarafina Dennie was in the midst of preparing a festive meal for her family when she received an unexpected phone call with distressing news about her brother’s hospitalization. Rushing to his bedside, she arrived just in time to witness the tragic passing of Nicous D’André Spring, aged 21.

The circumstances leading to Spring’s untimely demise were shrouded in mystery initially. Previously, Spring had been incarcerated at Montreal’s Bordeaux jail for violating a court-ordered curfew. Shockingly, at the time of his death, Spring was unlawfully held, as a judge had sanctioned his release the day before his passing.

Subsequent revelations emerged from internal staff incident reports obtained by journalists. Corrections officers portrayed Spring, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, as emotionally unstable and prone to volatile behavior. A violent altercation erupted between Spring and another inmate, prompting guards to intervene. Subsequently, they subjected Spring to pepper spray and a spit hood, a protective head covering made of mesh and fabric. Subsequently, Spring was found unresponsive after being placed in a cell.

This tragic incident garnered widespread attention, sparking debates on the appropriateness of forceful measures and the usage of such tools in detention facilities. Concerns were raised about the misuse of spit hoods, with reports linking them to 17 fatal incidents in Canada over the past two decades.

Experts highlighted the inconsistent training and policies across Canada governing the use of spit hoods, raising alarms about potential risks to individuals’ safety if not employed correctly. The lack of comprehensive data compilation on spit hood usage by various institutions further compounded these concerns.

The controversial device, designed in the late 1990s to shield first responders from bodily fluids, has become prevalent in law enforcement and medical settings. However, doubts persist about its safety and efficacy, with some questioning the need for stringent regulation and training protocols to mitigate risks.

The tragic outcome of Spring’s encounter with law enforcement underlines the complex issues surrounding the use of spit hoods and calls for a concerted effort to address gaps in training, oversight, and accountability to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
