Ontario’s Fire Marshal Office is currently investigating a tragic fire incident in Fort William First Nation, marking the fourth trailer fire in Thunder Bay district within a week. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue teams swiftly responded to the blaze on Squaw Bay Road just after 3 a.m. last Saturday.
The engulfed trailer, located away from neighboring residences, was swiftly attended to by four pumper crews and the platoon chief. Despite the rapid response, two individuals were tragically found deceased inside the trailer, as confirmed in a statement by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.
Anishinabek Police Service, along with Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Fire Marshal officials, were present at the scene following the incident. While the cause of the fire remains undisclosed, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue emphasized the legal requirement for functional smoke detectors and urged caution when using candles.
Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Anishinabek Police Service. The community has been offered support services during this challenging time. It is noted that Indigenous individuals face a significantly higher risk of fire-related fatalities compared to non-Indigenous populations, according to the National Indigenous Fire Safety Council.
Additional trailer fires reported in the region recently include:
– On Nov. 29, a fire occurred in Lake Helen First Nation, with the sole occupant sustaining minor injuries. A 21-year-old suspect from the First Nation has been charged with arson.
– On Dec. 1, a trailer fire on Anemki Drive in Fort William First Nation was swiftly contained by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, with a reminder about fire safety with heating sources.
– On Dec. 3, another trailer fire on Kingston Street in Thunder Bay, caused by a woodburning appliance, was extinguished without injuries reported.
The series of incidents emphasize the importance of fire safety and vigilance within the community to prevent further tragedies.
