President Trump and San Francisco’s mayor have both announced that federal agents will not be sent to the city, in a move that diverges from the President’s previous pressure on Democratic-led cities to bolster law enforcement against crime and illegal immigration. Mayor Daniel Lurie, a Democrat, revealed that Trump personally informed him of the decision to call off any plans for a federal deployment during a conversation on Wednesday night.
While San Francisco will continue collaborating with federal agencies to combat drug-related crimes, Mayor Lurie emphasized that a militarized approach to immigration enforcement would not be beneficial. Trump confirmed the agreement in a post on Truth Social, acknowledging Mayor Lurie’s request to allow the city to address the situation internally.
The President also mentioned that prominent tech executives Jensen Huang and Marc Benioff expressed optimism about San Francisco’s future during their conversations with him. Trump had previously hinted at the possibility of sending National Guard troops to Democratic-led cities, including San Francisco, despite legal challenges to such actions.
Although reports had suggested that over 100 federal agents were slated for deployment in San Francisco, the decision to cancel the surge aligns with the city’s stance against militarized immigration enforcement. Despite this agreement, a small group of Border Patrol vehicles encountered protesters at a U.S. Coast Guard base in the Bay Area, leading to a confrontation where less-lethal rounds were used to disperse the crowd.
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee condemned the potential federal deployment, emphasizing the importance of unity and denouncing external attempts to disrupt the city’s peace. Trump’s stringent immigration policies have faced criticism from Democrats, who argue that the crackdown has instilled fear among law-abiding residents, torn families apart, and negatively impacted local businesses.
Trump’s focus on addressing crime in San Francisco has been a recurring theme, with his recent decision to forego deploying federal agents representing a departure from his prior intentions. The President’s emphasis on immigration enforcement and law and order continues to be a key aspect of his administration’s policies.
