“Trump Threatens Delay on Windsor-Detroit Bridge Opening”

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a threat to delay the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, set to connect Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan. In a social media post, Trump stated that he would not allow the bridge to open until the United States is adequately compensated and until Canada treats the U.S. with what he deems as fairness and respect.

The $6.4 billion project has been entirely funded by the Canadian federal government, with joint ownership between Canada and the state of Michigan. Despite Trump’s claims that the bridge was constructed with minimal U.S. involvement, U.S. steel was used in the construction from the Michigan side of the river.

Construction on the six-lane bridge began in 2018 and is now in its final stages. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, overseeing the project, anticipates an opening early this year after completing final testing and inspections.

The Moroun family, owners of the existing Ambassador Bridge, had previously sought compensation due to the new bridge’s impact on their toll collection rights. Trump endorsed the Gordie Howe Bridge as a priority project in 2017, emphasizing its significance as an economic link between the two countries.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has voiced support for the bridge, highlighting the positive impact on jobs and the auto industry. In contrast, U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin criticized Trump’s threats, expressing concern over the potential economic repercussions on the state.

Trump’s recent actions are part of a pattern of tensions with Canada, including previous tariff threats and trade disputes. While he has not followed through on specific threats, Trump holds the authority to impede the bridge’s opening through executive actions.

Named after hockey legend Gordie Howe, the bridge is projected to improve commercial vehicle border crossing times and save truck operators significant time annually. The project’s economic impact assessment underscores the benefits it will bring to cross-border trade and transportation efficiency.
