Trustee Resigns Amid Travel Expense Controversy

An Ontario school trustee targeted for dismissal by the province’s education minister has now stepped down. Mark Watson, along with three other trustees from the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, embarked on a $45,000 trip to Italy to purchase $100,000 worth of art for the board. This controversial trip is among the instances highlighted by Ontario Education Minister Paul Calandra as proof of misusing public funds in some school boards, prompting calls for governance reforms.

While three trustees reimbursed their travel expenses, Calandra alleged that Watson declined to repay his portion in full, leaving a remaining debt of over $12,000. In response, Calandra introduced a bill on Monday aimed at terminating Watson and prohibiting him from serving as a trustee at any Ontario school board until 2030.

Expressing regret over the necessity of legislative intervention, Calandra emphasized the bill’s role in upholding accountability and integrity in education. He reiterated that Watson is still indebted to the school board and urged him to settle the outstanding amount promptly. Calandra stressed the importance of utilizing such funds for student advancement rather than funding extravagant European trips for disconnected school trustees.

Despite not providing a comment, Watson’s resignation was confirmed by the board on Friday. The situation underscores the ongoing efforts to address financial misconduct and reinforce transparency within Ontario’s education sector.
