“UK AI Production Company Partners with History Channel for Revolutionary Historical Travel Series”

Particle6, a UK-based AI production company founded by Eline Van der Velden, is collaborating with History Channel in the Netherlands to create a new AI-assisted historical travel series. The series, called “Straten van Toen” (Streets of the Past), is a 10-part program commissioned by Hearst Networks, a partial owner of History Channel. It will feature historian and author Corjan Mol exploring various Dutch locations, which will be visually transformed to reflect different historical periods using generative artificial intelligence tools.

Utilizing archival materials such as paintings, engravings, and photographs, Particle6 will reconstruct historical scenes for Mol to engage with. For instance, the series will showcase Amsterdam’s Rokin street during the 17th century when it housed the world’s first stock exchange, as well as Utrecht’s Janskerkhof square, a significant site of resistance activities during World War II.

This initiative follows previous AI-infused historical programs, including Hearst’s “Killer Kings,” claimed to be the first documentary series featuring fully AI-generated imagery. Additionally, Channel 4 in the UK recently aired a documentary hosted entirely by an AI presenter, sparking discussions about the impact of generative AI on the authenticity of documentary content.

Particle6 gained attention earlier this year for introducing Tilly Norwood, an AI-generated performer. In response to concerns, Van der Velden emphasized that AI should be viewed as a tool complementing human creativity, similar to CGI in filmmaking. Despite opposition from acting unions, some industry figures, such as actors Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine, have engaged with generative AI technology by licensing their likenesses for various AI applications.

The debate over the extent of AI integration in entertainment continues, with actors like Toni Collette, Ralph Ineson, and Odessa A’zion criticizing the use of AI-generated characters like Tilly Norwood. The industry faces existential questions about the evolving role of AI in creative productions, prompting discussions on ethical and artistic implications.
