Saskatoon may not top the list of winter vacation spots, but that hasn’t hindered the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball team from drawing elite international talent. Over the past ten years, the Huskies have integrated European players into their team, resulting in three national championships.
Head coach Lisa Thomaidis plays a pivotal role in the recruitment of international players due to her experience as the national head coach for Canada and Germany, which has expanded her network globally. The recruitment journey began with Latvian guard Sabine Dukate in 2016, who significantly impacted the team with two national championships.
This year, the top-ranked Huskies feature two international players – Swedish forward Olivia Harm and English guard Charli Wroe. Harm, in her second year with the team, highlights the emerging trend of Swedish players moving to the U.S. for basketball. Thomaidis, who recruited Harm out of high school, emphasizes the challenges of bringing international players to Canada, citing her wide network and constant scouting efforts worldwide.
Wroe, a Manchester native, spent two years in the U.S. before joining the U of S team. She noted the difference in the style of play between the U.S. and Canada, emphasizing the team-oriented approach in Canada compared to the individual focus in the States. Thomaidis mentioned that the educational quality, program success, and overall environment at U of S serve as attractive factors for international recruits.
Both players shared their adjustment experiences to life in Saskatchewan, with Harm mentioning cultural differences and Wroe highlighting the climate change from Texas to Canada. Thomaidis expressed optimism about Harm and Wroe’s contributions to the team, emphasizing Harm’s versatility and Wroe’s experience as valuable assets.
Looking ahead, the Huskies aim to defend their national title, with Harm focusing on recovery and improvement, while Wroe aims to learn from seasoned players like Gauge Grassick. The team has started the season strong, winning their initial four games convincingly and is set to face the Manitoba Bisons in their upcoming matches in Winnipeg.
