John Deveau, a devoted family man, former Nova Scotia MLA, and long-time Toronto Blue Jays enthusiast, had always harbored a dream of witnessing a live game. Tragically, a sudden fatal aneurysm in July thwarted his plans. However, his wife Carol Deveau, carrying John’s ashes and a shared passion for the sport, realized his dream this month.
Adorned in John’s cherished Blue Jays jersey, worn for over 15 years, Carol attended the game against the Boston Red Sox on Sept. 24 and 25. Accompanied by a small container of John’s ashes and his obituary, she expressed admiration for the team, stating, “They did a wonderful job; my husband would be so proud of them.”
John, who had been battling heart issues for some time, had been granted clearance by their doctor in June to travel, enabling Carol to secure tickets for the games. Originally intending to surprise him with the tickets, Carol revealed the plan to John, who was overwhelmed with joy. A lifelong fan, John had never had the opportunity to attend a game in person but faithfully supported the Jays from home, memorizing the team roster and offering enthusiastic support during matches.
Carol continued John’s tradition at the Rogers Centre, holding up his obituary picture and ashes during the games to symbolize his presence and support for the team. Despite the Blue Jays losing the first two games of the series, they bounced back with a resounding victory in the third game, winning 6-1. Carol expressed her elation at witnessing the win, feeling John’s spirit alongside her, cheering for the team.
Describing John as a remarkable individual and active community member, Carol highlighted his involvement in volunteer work, including the Special Olympics and the Tabitha Centre, a local outreach initiative. She emphasized his influence in fostering a love for sports within the family, with John always present to support his children and grandchildren during their games.
As anticipation builds for the American League Division Final Game, Toronto fans are eagerly awaiting the Blue Jays’ playoff journey. The team is set to face either the Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees in the upcoming matches. Meanwhile, back in Nova Scotia, Carol remains a staunch supporter, believing that John’s spirit is intertwined with the team’s success, echoing his unwavering dedication to the Blue Jays.
